Niobe passed away last night.
I think she may have had a stroke some time yesterday; she went very quickly from being interested in food and comfortable napping places and able to move about the cage enough to find them to being almost completely unaware of her surroundings and able to breathe comfortably but not much beyond that. We stayed up with her as long as we could, then took her to bed with us so she could stay warm and not be bothered by the other rats. She finally gave out around 5:45 a.m.

Date: 2006-10-12 04:50 am (UTC)And it helps to be expecting it. When a critter that should have had years left gets sick or is hit by a car or something, what's particularly sad is that you're missing all that time you ought to have had. Whereas with Niobe, pretty much the last year was all bonus. I am really lucky to have had her as long as I did.
I am also really lucky to have the three remaining rats I do, and I hope they all set new lifespan records too.

*hugs* and tea offered.
